ARCHIVE FOR JANUARY 2008

January 6th, 2008

A wonderful resource has surfaced for men and women of the U.S. military armed forces.

Military Advanced Education has released the top 30 military-friendly colleges in the United States based upon information gathered from 100 schools that applied for the distinction. The top colleges and universities were selected based upon criteria such as number of military students, availability of financial aid, number of military contracts and more.

A significant number of online schools showed up among the winners, along with educational institutions that offer both accredited online degree programs and traditional on-campus classes.

Those selected are institutions that open their arms to active duty and non-active duty military. Many of these schools are either located in close proximity to military bases, are distance-learning schools, or offer courses directly on military installations.  Others provide special scholarships and financial  aid to the troops and their wives. But almost all bend over backwards to offer additional support and consideration to members of the military and their families.

The top 30 military-friendly colleges are as follows:

  1. American Military University
  2. Central Texas College
  3. Coastline Community College
  4. Colorado Technical University
  5. Excelsior College
  6. Saint Leo College

Finally, it is January. The holiday season is over; and it is back to business as usual. But this year, things can be different. This year, you can realize your dream of earning a college degree.

January of this new year is a perfect time to check out the many online degree programs that are offered by numerous accredited online schools. These programs offer the flexibility of studying at your home, office or wherever the Internet is available. With a few simple tools — a computer, a modem and access to the Internet — you can be on your way to receiving your college diploma.

Try out one of today’s hot careers by earning a business degree, a computer science degree, an accounting degree, an engineering degree, a degree in criminal justice, a law degree, or any one of the myriad of online degrees. Or you may want to test the waters with an online professional certificate  — like the paralegal certificate program. These programs require fewer courses and usually hone in on a particular specialty or focus within a career field.

But it is important to take a step and get started on the road to better job opportunities, a higher salary and a greater sense of accomplishment.

Why wait another year? Just do it.

So you have been on that merry-go-round of indecision about returning to school. And now you have finally decided that this will be your year. No more delays or excuses — just action.

Well, you have picked a great year, 2008, to get on the bandwagon and change your destiny. Educational technology is in your favor; and online schools are the cat’s meow.

So how do you begin the path to your dream of acquiring a college diploma? Here are five helpful steps:

  1. Choose an accredited online school. One way to do this is to go online and use a reputable college directory, like Directory of Schools. There, you will find listings of colleges — both online and traditional — with easily accessible links to college information forms. It is a user-friendly way to peruse numerous career fields and find helpful information on your computer.
  2. Fill out online information forms at Directory of Schools, or other reputable educational websites, for colleges, universities and trade schools that offer the program in which you are interested. These schools are delighted to send additional information. Then, you may contact them with any further questions. A friendly voice on the other end of the phone will guide you through the application and registration process.
  3. At the college of your choice, pursue financial aid. There are a numerous federal and private financial aid resources — including scholarships and low-interest loans. Each college has an office that handles these inquiries and helps potential students to determine their eligibility for aid.
  4. Once you have been accepted into a college program, prepare to work diligently. Realize that success in college will involve some elbow grease. You will have to sacrifice several hours of your time each week per class to study and complete homework assignments.
  5. Hang in there for the long haul, even when the  school work becomes challenging. Take advantage of any help that is available from the school – including tutors, teachers, online libraries, and counselors. Do not give up; just ask for help. The college has counselors that are available to insure your success.

Get off of the merry-go-round and enroll in an online degree program in 2008. After all, this is your year.

There is only one way to take the General Educational Development (GED) test -- in person at an official GED testing center.
Preparation for a new career requires consistent time and diligence.  But several careers offer a foot in the door with two years or less of training.
