Although most employment trains stopped chugging long ago, one is still barreling down the rails at full speed, snapping up scores of passengers — or employees — along the way.

It is the federal jobs train, the new gravy train that serves up a full menu of competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits.

One top hiring agency with a feast of opportunities falls under the Department of Homeland Security, offering diverse job openings in a number of different career environments.

When most people think about homeland security, they picture law enforcement officers, security screeners and air marshals.

But the Department of Homeland Security represents far more than that. It contains a conglomerate of professionals from a wide array of educational disciplines who work together for one purpose — to keep America safe.

Many careers in homeland security are built upon accredited traditional and online degrees in criminal justice, accounting, engineering, business administration, information technology, computer science, law & paralegal, social sciences (psychology and sociology), physical sciences and more.

In addition to competitive salaries, federal employees enjoy excellent benefits no longer available in most other jobs. These benefits may include:

  • comprehensive health insurance,
  • flexible work schedules,
  • retirement benefits,
  • paid holidays,
  • paid training,
  • personal leave,
  • long-term care insurance,
  • tuition reimbursement, and
  • transportation subsidies.

Although military veterans and current federal workers may have priority, government job openings are generally a great opportunity for those who meet educational and experience eligibility requirements. Potential employees must pass a background check; but the U.S. government welcomes a diversity of people, including those with physical handicaps.

Online schools are a great way to prepare for many of these jobs, with online degree and certificate programs providing the ability to work while earning a college diploma. Or perhaps just a few online classes would meet hiring requirements, in which case, tuition reimbursement may fund the remaining college classes.

The Department of Homeland Security is just one of several federal agencies that offers an excellent opportunity to those with both traditional and online degrees and certificates.

So don’t delay, catch the federal gravy train before it is filled to capacity.
