It is difficult to turn on the news without encountering several stories that involve the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
So it should be no surprise that this agency is a large employer, providing numerous jobs within the federal government.
Take, for example, the recent news about the death of Osama Bin Laden, who was killed just days ago by an elite group of Navy Seals.
Following Bin Laden’s death, several agencies that fall under the Department of Homeland Security have stepped up their readiness to act if needed. Other agencies of the DHS are being used to gather counter-terrorism intelligence, protect telecommunications networks, and prepare for any catastrophic events on American soil, in order to further secure the safety of U.S. citizens.
Homeland Security also springs into action when natural disasters take place, such as the destruction caused by over 300 tornadoes that moved through the southern states just last month.
Many Americans encounter the Department of Homeland Security when they attempt to board a passenger airline and must navigate the security checkpoints. The agents who scan carry-on luggage, guide travelers into 3D scanning machines, and pat down unlucky ‘random’ travelers are all employees of the Department of Homeland Security.
Others who work for the following agencies are part of DHS, as are local and national law enforcement officials: Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Office of Inspector General, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Secret Service.
Those who are interested in working for the Department of Homeland Security should consider earning a traditional or online degree in criminal justice, business administration, computer science, aerospace engineering or accounting.
Homeland Security utilizes graduates from these and a number of other disciplines as part of its growing force of competent, knowledgeable professionals who help keep America safe.
