Would you choose a job based upon the health care benefits you could score?

Many job-seekers would say yes.

Although wages are still a major factor in choosing where to work, the enticement of excellent on-the-job health care benefits is growing in priority as medical costs skyrocket.

Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) estimates that health care spending in the U.S. exceeded $2.3 trillion in 2008. A portion of these expenditures came out of the take-home pay of employees, who shouldered expensive premiums and other costs.

According to KFF, an average of $7, 681 per U.S. resident is spent on health care costs.

Information gathered by the U.S. Census in 2010 shows that there were 50.7 million people who had no health care insurance. Yet, of the 253.6 million who do have health care insurance, millions still pay hefty co-payment amounts for prescriptions, doctor visits, surgical procedures and medical equipment.

It often pays to accept a job with excellent health care benefits and a slightly lower salary, rather than one offering more money and inadequate coverage.

For those who are still deciding on a career, it can be helpful to research careers and jobs that historically offer the best benefits.

Of course, government jobs are at the top of the list, especially for military servicemembers.

But a few other careers and industries that may offer excellent health care benefits include:

The bottom line is that job-seekers should ask potential employers to give details about health care benefits — including who receives coverage, what type of coverage is offered, and how much of the premiums employees are expected to pay.

Then, potential employees should carefully choose their new job accordingly.
